Heart and Soul of the Brown and Gold – Bugle Call of the 31st Battalion

The Story of the Cornet used for the Bugle Calls for the 31st Battalion is an interesting one told by Life Member and historian Peter Nelson. This year (19th July 2026) will mark the 110th anniversary of the battle of Fromelles which will be commemorated in a service at the Ipswich RSL Memorial Hall Honour Stone at 63  Nicholas Street, Ipswich, Queensland.

The Battle of Fromelles fought in Northern France by the Australian 5th Division was the first battle by Australian troops on the Western Front after the withdrawal and re-organization following the Gallipoli campaign.

Our 31st Battalion was a part of the 8th Brigade of the 5th Division during the battle. It is the only Battalion from that battle still serving. As the CO – LTCOL Merrick Lalor and the RSM – WO1 Glenn Herbert of 31/42 Bn RQR are attending the commemoration, the Army Museum North Queensland has granted permission to allow the 31st Bn WW1 – Cornet to accompany the RSM down to Brisbane to be on Display at the Commemoration Service.

This Cornet was originally donated to the 31st Bn by Mr A.J.Cotton of Hidden Vale Station,-Grandchester, approx 32 Kms from Ipswich. After its Historic Service in WW1. – By sheer chance, it was acquired on ebay by 31st Bn Assoc. Historian and Life Member Peter Nelson in 2009.

Peter’s Grandfather LT J.M. Nelson MC served with 31st Battalion during WW1 and took part in the Battle of Fromelles.
This Cornet, after Peter arranged it to be repaired, was used to play the Last Post for each of the 250 Bodies found at Pheasant Wood in 2008 that were reburied in the New Cemetery at Pheasant Wood in 2010. The search for these missing diggers from the Battle of Fromelles relentlessly driven by Lambis Englazos is covered in other posts on this website.

The history which Peter has entitled it “The Heart and Soul of the Brown and Gold” is featured below and is well worth while reading. This Cornet will be on Display at our Commemoration Service at the Ipswich RSL on the 19th July 2026.

Pte Harry Willis – The Key to The Missing Men From the Battle of Fromelles

The Battle of Fromelles was fought in northern France on 19/20th July 1916. It has been described as the worst 24 hours in Australian Military history because of the horrific number of casualties (5,0000) in such a short period of time. Regimental No 983 Pte Harry Willis was one of the diggers who fought and died in this battle.

Harry was a farm labourer who grew up in the South Gippsland area of Victoria on a farmlet near Alberton. He Enlisted at the age of 19 at Yarram on 14th July 1915.  He was posted to the 31st Battalion, a part of the 8th Brigade of the 5th Division. After training in Egypt he was deployed with the Battalion to the western Front in Northern France not far from the Belgian Border. It was here that the 5th Division, with very little preparation,  was, within days,  disastrously plunged into the Battle of Fromelles.

One of the things that Harry carried with him into battle was a medal issued by the Shire of Alberton and this was to become a key means of identifying that an Australian soldier was buried in unmarked grave pit along with 250 others. This grave pit was adjacent to Pheasant Wood on the German side of the line where bodies had been collected by German burial parties in the aftermath of the battle. These missing bodies lay undetected for almost 100 years after the tragic battle.

The search for the missing soldiers from the battle of Fromelles has featured in a number of articles on this website. These articles can be retrieved by typing the name Lambis Englezos in the search Bar of this website. Lambis is the prime researcher and motivator who over many years of persistent effort was responsible for locating Harry Willis and the other missing 250 soldiers from the battle.

More recently at the behest of the Military Historical Society Of Australia, Lambis also delivered an interesting lecture at the Gaythorne RSL Brisbane (19th February 2026) outlining the processes, battles and struggles he undertook to provide some final dignity for these missing diggers.

Dear Members & Friends, I have further good news relating to our Battle of Fromelles Commemoration Service on Sunday 19th July 2026.

As the CO – LTCOL Merrick Lalor & RSM – WO1 Glenn Herbert of 31/42 Bn RQR are attending, the Army Museum North Queensland has granted permission to allow the 31st Battalion WW1 – Cornet to accompany the RSM down to Brisbane to be on Display at the Commemoration Service.

This Cornet, after Peter arranged it to be repaired, was used to play the Last Post for each of the 250 Bodies found at Pheasant Wood in 2008 that were reburied in the New Cemetery at Pheasant Wood in 2010.Refer to Peter Nelson’s attached detailed Account of the History of the Cornet, – the 31st Bn Band, and its Members, & the Cornet Player, – James Compton who after being wounded at Fromelles was Hospitalised in England. Whilst recuperating he was then attached to the No1 Command Band – “Sutton Veny” where his Musical talents came to the fore, as he became the Bandmaster and Trainer of the Band and here he remained for the duration of the War. He was promoted to WO1, became responsible for all AIF Bands in England and led the Australian Victory March reviewed by HRH the King past Australia House London.
He was called upon to give three Command performances before their Majesties, at Buckingham Palace, Lords, and the Opening of Australia House. After the War on return to Australia, he became Bandmaster and Band Trainer to many Bands in Queensland, NSW and NZ, ending up back as Bandmaster and Trainer to the 31st Bn Band Cairns in 1935. As a Trainer to A Grade Bands He won 10 Australian Firsts, 4 seconds and 2 thirds. He was also Australian Champion “Cornet soloist” five times between 1922 to 1928.
The attached “The Heart and Soul of the Brown and Gold” written by Life Member Peter Nelson, is worth while reading. This Cornet will be on Display at our Commemoration Service at the Ipswich RSL on the 19th July. Warmest Regards to all,

Update of 31 Battalion AIF WW1 Mamber Lists

Association Member Peter Nelson, is in the process of completing the latest update of members of the 31st Battalion AIF from World War 1. This has been an ongoing project which has already taken an immense effort on his part. Further information is being gathered and verified from different sources leading to an increased understanding of the lives of the men who fought in this savage global conflict.

Of particular significance in this latest update of “O Members” is the information on 31st Bn RSM (and later Lt) James O’Rourke MC. Below is a brief excerpt and a picture from Peter’s email:

“Had some satisfaction in locating the original 31st Battalion’s RSM, James Francis O’Rourke, Reg No 1. His story is a sad one, had been searching for this man for some time. Am attaching the photo of 31st Bn Officers aboard HMAT ‘Wandilla’ -AWM photo A03378. James Francis O’Rourke is standing at extreme back left of photo.”

100 Years of Service – One Family – Three Majors

When it comes to contributions to the service the Hastie family are up there with the best of them. Led by the father Doug and followed by Sons Marc and Brook the family reached a combined service length of 100 years and counting. All were members of 31RQR at some stage together, with Doug as Bn 2/IC whilst Marc and Brook were in the ranks.

Doug who originally joined on 1st Mar1961 served  in a number of units both in the ranks and as a commissioned Officer. Posted to 31RQR in the 1980s he finished his military career in 11 Training Group, Townsville. He is one of the few members of the Australian Army to wear three separate long service medals EM RFM RFD. (See the table below showing tally of family service).

Sons Marc and Brook both  joined 31RQR initially with Marc transferring to the ARA as a Captain and later as a  Major whilst Brook’s service continued as a reservist through to the rank of Major. Brook is currently an Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Queensland Her Excellency Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM. He is a candidate for Staff College and we wish him every Success for the future.

Anzac Day Commemorations – 2026

Anzac Day Commemorations saw members of the 31 Battalion Association marching in Townsville and in Brisbane whilst serving members of 31/42 Battalion RQR provided catafalque parties in the Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay areas.

One feature of the Association’s Brisbane march was that three members of the Hastie family were in the march, Father Doug and his two Sons Marc and Brook. Whilst Brook is the only member of the family still serving their combined service will amount to 100years on 8th May 2026. Congratulations to the Hastie family on your record of service to Australia.

Also marching with us in Brisbane this Anzac day was Association Member Keith Watts who at 93 Years of age kept pace with the best. Keith reckons that he must be one of the oldest ex-Nasho members still on parade. Our member George Stanger claims to be the oldest surviving ex-Nasho member but George was prevented from attending the march this year due to his caring duties at home.

Fortunately, considering the average age of our members in Brisbane, we were placed behind the Pipes and Drums of the St Andrews Pipe Band and the Cameron Highlanders which saw us moving at a more sedate pace than in previous years.

For a small branch they definitely pull well above their weight.
Our Congratulations go to them for a great year.
Regards to all,
Tony  Wadeson.
Hello  All,
On Friday the 27th February the Charters Towers Branch conducted our AGM at the Charters Towers RSL to be  followed by the monthly meeting.
The meeting was attended by seven members with one apology and one non-attendance.
After the preliminaries, Raymond gave the 44th President’s report which was well received, a  movement accepted the report and it carried.
I then gave the Financial and Assets Reports and moved that they be recorded as true and correct. The movement was carried.
The executives then vacated the chairs. Life Member Alby Coffison then chaired the meeting and nominations were called for  executive positions.
Raymond Barrett was again nominated as President, he accepted the position and the vote carried.
Yours truly was nominated as Treasurer and Secretary; I accepted and the vote carried. I moved that all members of our Branch be Committee Members, Raymond seconded the nomination and the vote carried.
The date for the 2027 AGM was discussed and the decision was that the 2027 AGM would be held on Friday the 19th February, 2027.
The President then closed the AGM at  1540 Hrs.
The February Meeting followed, during General Business, our next project being a “Memorial Sone dedicated to the 31st Infantry Battalion” to be placed at the Charters Towers RSL was discussed.
Alby Coffison’s son had located and photographed stones at a local mine that seem to be ideal for our project.  After enquiries, permission was granted  and we now have the stones for our memorial.
Now comes the interesting section, what to include on the memorial.
Our thoughts are an Australian Army Badge at the Top, the Chocolate and Gold colors and a plaque etc. below.
We would appreciate any suggestions from the Association members on items that may be included  on the memorial.
Thank You,
Kind Regards,
Vic Nicol.
Secretary, Charters Towers Branch.

31st Infantry Battalion Assoc.(Brisbane Branch)

President’s Annual Report – Year 2025

This past year has been a busy one for an old President, such as myself.

We started the Year with our AGM in March in this very Room. Due to its convenient, central position between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and very close to the Railway Station, I think we should consider “Sports Central Club” to be our future Main Meeting Venue. As has been done in the past, I can picture myself, travelling home by train, falling asleep, & waking up in Ipswich.

Immediately after the AGM, it was finalising the planning for Anzac Day. Planning, starts not long after the previous Anzac Day, with me having to attend three meetings, at the RSL- S.E. Districts Sub Branch at New Farm. I have been doing this for about twenty years or so now, and experience has indicated it pays to attend, to discuss issues as things change from meeting to meeting. However, they are now enabling us to join the meeting on line – “Microsoft Teams” which will save me a three Quarter Hour Drive at night, each way, each meeting. My main problem this year was that it looked like at one stage, I was the only one going to March with our three Banners. However, as usual the Hastie family came to the rescue a week before the event. Doug’s son LTCOL Marc Hastie, regular soldier, recently retired. Marc, had recently moved up to Caboolture, contacted me to advise, that he intended to march with the 31st Bn, and hoped to bring three more old associates with him. Doug Hastie, on the other hand, had only just been discharged from hospital. Well on the Day, one of Marc’s associates turned out to be an ex 51Bn and a Journalist. She organised a fantastic write up about the 31Bn, and the Hastie family with the ABC people covering the march.

Doug, unfortunately, couldn’t march on the day, but was immediately behind us in a Jeep. As we were waiting to March off, the President of the National Serviceman’s Assoc asked if he could March with us, as he couldn’t find his Group. Minutes later another four Natsho’s turned up and joined us. We ended up with about eleven in the group. – Marc Hastie led us, Doug Hastie was, “Tail end Charlie” in the Jeep, & there was Brook Hastie on the Saluting Dias with The Governor, taking the Salute, – with the ABC telling everyone in the crowd as well as, “on air listening”, what a great Unit the 31st Bn had been, and were now the 31st/42 Bn, the pride of the north. Couldn’t, have been a better result.

Shortly after Anzac Day, in May I received the sad news of the Passing of my mate, and brother PL Commander of the early sixties, – Warren Gunder. Warren was a foundation member of the Brisbane Branch of the 31st Bn Assoc. and a very close friend of Ray Fogg. Warren hadn’t been well for some time, and as he lived in Nambucca Heads, I never heard of his Death until after the Funeral. Warren, joined the 31st Bn in 1956 and transferred to the Regular Army in 1969. He served with the AATTV in Vietnam, from April 1970 to April 1971. He retired from the Army in 1983 with the Rank of MAJ. He was a good Soldier, and a good friend. May you RIP “Wazza.”

Our Next big project for the Year was The Battle of Fromelles Commemoration Service at Ipswich RSL. Mick & I had been meeting with RSL Ipswich Secretary, Debbie Wadwell, since January. It had been decided to contact the Governor General to be our Principal Guest of Honour. We then had to organise a principal Speaker. We had planned on having Chris Hamilton, but unfortunately Chris was going to be in France at the time of the Service. We decided on the person best fitted for the Job, our very own Association President Greg Stokie. We didn’t end up with the Governor General, so we asked BRIG Bill Date ADC to be our Special Guest. Everything went smoothly. We had Three BRIG’s – two COL’s – an Air Vice Marshall, – The French Consul General, and the Mayor, in attendance.

I was greatly surprised, at the end of the Ceremony, to be presented with a Tribute – “Life Membership of the 31stBn Assoc.” by BRIG Bill Date ADC. I was greatly honoured, and thank my fellow Association Members for the award.

In August, I attended the 31/42RQR and Association Annual Church Service in Townsville. The Service was well attended. Much to my surprise at the end of the Service I was called up to the front of the Church by President Greg Stokie, to be presented a Second Life Membership Tribute, this time by the Governor of Queensland – Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM. That was a real surprise. I’m again, deeply honoured.

The afternoon finished well, by spending a couple of hours with BRIG Richard Pearce discussing Rugby in great detail, whilst awaiting our respective return flights to Brisbane. Whilst waiting in line to board my flight the Governor who had attended the Cowboys NRL game came along, recognised me & said “Hello we meet again.” She then went to the front end of the Plane & I went to the rear with Cattle, feeling very chuffed indeed.

Unfortunately, the last couple of months of the year, proved to be a time of illness for both my wife and I.

So I was out of action for over a month. All is now well.

I would like to pass on my appreciation to all members of our Branch, for doing their best, to attend and support our various events and services. We are all ageing, knees, hips and backs, playing up to hamper our movements. But thank you all, for your support. Thank you Deputy President Chris for being the shoulder I can lean on to get good advice and reliable support.

Special thanks to Mick James, as Secretary, and putting so much work into the “Battle of Fromelles” and the “Battle for Australia Committee”. Mick is still suffering from some after effects from his Stroke, but he soldiers on without complaint.

Thanks to Marty O’Sullivan, who is learning the ropes of accountancy and protecting our Funds efficiently.

Our Committee members Doug Hastie, Tim Lewis, and Jack Sunner, thank you for doing things that keep us moving.

Special thanks to you Pierre Sellier OAM for doing so much for us here in Australia, and representing the 31st Bn Assoc. in Fromelles, and France.

Bring – on – 2026
